Enduring a long haul flight with Oscar. Y’只知道其中一些 我生命中不可避免的 lingered on the ‘things to dread’ list.

Having experienced a challenging four 春天去爱丁堡的火车上有几个小时 my then 10-month-old baby boy, when confronted 与the prospect of up to eight hours in a confined space above the clouds, I did not fancy our chances for an easy ride 与an –在他的脚上,渴望去–差不多16个月大的奥斯卡·斯坦利(Oscar Stanley)。

I – from Gatwick, London to JFK, New York 与挪威 – has taught me anything, it’永远不要再给我儿子怀疑的好处,因为对我的耻辱–他证明我一路走到美国都是错误的。

Because before that I want to talk about the airline 和 I still wish to credit James 和 I (but mainly all the lovely people who dished out words of wisdom 和 advice pre-trip) with the careful planning 和 preparation we did for said journeys, which for sure made it largely a smoother process 和 will undoubtedly help anyone who finds themselves in a similar travelling with 小家伙,困境。

从一开始就完全透明– as you likely have gathered, I partnered 与them for this trip. Which means they supplied the 飞行s in exchange for me sharing my experience of flying 与them 这里 on this 博客, as well as snaps from our trip on my Instagram的, which you can see 这里. Having visited New York on numerous occasions, over the years both James 和 I have flown there 和 back with a range of airlines. But neither of us had ever flown

I went to London on the train last week 和 it cost me more than that!

对于LowFare +经济舱机票,这就是我们三者的方式 travelled – prices start at £199 one way. The + dimension relates to baggage allowance, the ability to choose your seats when you book 和 having both a hot meal 和 a light meal during your journey. On international 飞行s 与Norwegian, little ones (provided they are under the age of two on the date of 其 return or one-way 飞行) sit on your lap on an infant ticket, at 10% of the adult fare plus any airport taxes –每种方式的起价为£37.10。

img_2697

如果你想跟风,一个孩子’s ticket is charged at 70% of an adult fare plus airport taxes, 与prices starting at £72.10 each way.

一世 ’d imagined, given the low fares that 挪威 offer, that it would have a budget feel 和 a no frills aesthetic to it, but that couldn’远离事实。

  • Touchscreen entertainment. Oscar was also a fan 和 spent a good 30 plus minutes pressing at the screen during the outward leg of the journey. I was also occupied by the interactive map that allows you to zoom in on areas around the world 和 investigate points of interest.
  • 职员 – nothing was too much trouble, 和 everything was done 与courtesy, enthusiasm 和 a smile.

那个窗口 时间完全属于自己– bum firmly on seat – where my biggest decision lay in whether to pass the hours catching up on some kip, watching back-to-back movies, gazing cloudswards or having the time to really get into a good book. But as 与everything that before didn’不需要太多的准备或思考,一旦拥有了迷你车, your outlook 和 expectations are really rather different.

I without a doubt over-panicked about the flying 与Oscar situation. But I don’t regret that, because that worry ensured we planned well, thought of everything 和 garnered lots of useful advice which I will use time 和 again when travelling in the future. I asked my followers on Instagram的 for tips, 和 the ideas that came back were pretty great! Thank you to everyone who took the time to share 其 experiences 和 leave a comment, all of the suggestions were brilliant – 任何有兴趣的人都可以阅读 这里.

我们可能在接下来的运输中花费了大约30英镑– in my view not too bad a price to pay for peace of mind that you are well stocked up on distraction 和 entertainment for your tiny human. This was our survival kit, created entirely on recommendations from others who had braved travelling 与tinies too:

  • Snacks. Take treats galore they said (they being anyone 和 everyone)! Snacks of all varieties, shapes 和 sizes were a must. And I have to say, now on the other side of our adventure, I definitely concur. Forget scheduled eating times  – we had biscuits, fruit, raisins, dry cereal 和 rice cakes – all of which O grazed on at some point while we were in the air, 和 at the airport too come to think of it.  Also on Instagram的, @popupandplayco gave us the tip of Chupa Chups lollies or an equivalent to help 与popping ears during take off 和 landing.
  • @bella_fletcher, @mummy_mack, @topknotanddaisies 和 several others suggested we take plenty of stickers. We bought two sticker books – these actually didn’t even make it out the hand luggage on either 飞行 – but I’ll take them 与us next time.
  • Lots of little new toys, wrapped up in several sheets of paper. This was my favourite bit of advice 和 it came from @tokaipenny@theminiyears。一世’d never have thought to do something like this myself 和 it worked a treat on our outward journey. Though we must have wrapped 20 toys 和 in reality he opened just half of that number.

The one thing which was repeatedly suggested by friends 和 family – which we failed to get around to, mainly down to time 和 partly down to budget – was to invest in a tablet device 和 load it 与cartoons for Oscar. Not saying that we won’将来再接受该建议以进行另一次旅行–但这次,还有很多其他事情要举行奥斯卡’的注意,我们没有一个人就生存了下来,这也归因于挪威人’的互动娱乐系统是 packed with children’s programmes 和 films aplenty.

img_2698

温斯坦利’s Pramworld, very generously gifted us 与the JetKids床箱,一个漂亮的工具包,简而言之就是一个创新的三合一小生命保护器! Oscar. On the way there he slept on it for around three hours. THREE hours! In that time James 和 I got to eat our hot meals in undisturbed peace AND we both watched a movie (布鲁克林区 对我{喜欢它!}, 星球大战 for him)  –一点点意想不到的幸福! 对我们来说,这等同于另一部电影,实习生, watched 和 thoroughly enjoyed by us both!) a meal 和 a bit of sleep for James 和 I. While Oscar could have easily slept in our arms –BedBox为我们所有人提供了更加舒适的选择。

img_2691

Frankly, he was a bundle of fun. Happy, inquisitive, amused 和 occupied mainly by the interactive entertainment system (tablet shmablet!) 和 wait for it –机上安全卡!他也很满足,只是坐在我的 lap 和 looking out the window, while his favourite thing was to stand in the corner between the wall of the plane 和 where my legs were, watching people go by 和 yanking at the pocket on the back of the seat in front. Go figure!!

img_2693img_2694

他没有’在旅程的任何一段都哭一次– 和 after we landed on both occasions fellow passengers 和 members of the 飞行 crew praised him for being “such a good boy!” James 和 I were brimming 与pride. It was such a wonderful feeling and it still hasn’t left me.

*Travelling 与an infant 与Norwegian: If you want your infant (aged under two) to have 其 own seat, you’我需要打电话给挪威人以预订儿童票’s Contact Centre – a seat will not be assigned if you buy an infant ticket online. You can travel 与up to two infants. One can travel on your lap, but you’ll need to purchase a seat for the second infant (at the price of a child ticket) 和 travel 与an approved baby seat.

With huge thanks to 挪威 who I collaborated 与on this post. All thoughts are of course my own. To book 飞行s 与Norwegian you can visit them at www.norwegian.com. You can also follow along 与them on 推特Instagram的 and 脸书.

  • Sounds like a brilliant 飞行 indeed! I felt lots of fear when travelling 与my son on his first 飞行 at 9 weeks (would he scream the plane down) but 20+ 飞行s later including long hauls to New York 和 we’ve got Qatar 和 Zanzibar in a few weeks, 和 he absolutely loves it…which is great as I avoid those stares 和 learnt lots of great tips for flying 与babies http://www.whiitelist.com/2016/09/21-great-tips-for-flying-with-babies.html?m=1. One thing lots of my readers have said they loved is the sky baby mattress which is useful for lapping babies as infants 和 they can fall asleep comfortably.

I’ve only been once 和 was dreadfully ill the entire time xx
